Do you scare easily? Would the thought of ghostly figures wandering through corridors at night keep you awake? Well don’t worry, because that would give us the shivers too! While the chance of spotting an apparition during one of our adult breaks is probably pretty slim to be honest, there’s no doubt about it that many of our properties have incredibly varied and extremely interesting histories, some stretching back many hundreds of years.
Bodelwyddan Castle in North Wales is one such property where over the years there have been a few paranormal sightings. The estate’s history dates back to the 1460s, although the Grade II-listed property that stands in the magnificent grounds today was built between 1830 and 1852. The castle was later used as a girls’ boarding school between 1920 and 1982, and some reports have made mention of glasses there getting inexplicably knocked off tables. It’s said that a former headmistress of the girls’ school was strictly against alcohol – but whether ghostly goings-on are to blame for a few spilt drinks on drinks-inclusive short breaks with Warner is a bit tough to say.
In the kitchen at Bodelwyddan, a figure known as ‘the blue lady’ has been spotted passing quietly through, while in the Watts Hall witnesses have seen a woman dressed all in white passing from the corridor into the thick castle walls. Keen to discover more? Well, consider joining one of our ghost tours which are run regularly throughout the year.
There’s also a ghost tour available at Thoresby Hall in Nottinghamshire, a Grade I-listed country house set in 30 acres of stunning grounds. The property that stands today dates back to around 1875, and if you’re keen to hear about some of the hall’s spine-tingling history then the ghost walk is a fun option. Of course it’ll be up to you to decide whether stories of whispering voices and footsteps in the corridors could conceivably be true. Is it really possible for people to have heard a ghostly horse and carriage riding through the grounds?
While we can’t guarantee a spooky atmosphere when you pay a visit to one of our properties, we’re more than confident you’ll find a relaxing one. And if walking down dark corridors in the depths of night isn’t your idea of fun then don’t worry because there’s a huge range of other fun-filled activities on offer. Just get in touch with a member of the team if you’d like to find out more.
