Norton Grange’s Easy Guide to Ferry Travel

Just how easy is it to get to the Isle of Wight?…. A one word answer, Easy!

Many of our new guests have many concerns over travelling to the Isle of Wight, what does it involve? Do I need a passport? How long does it take? Is the ferry really rocky?

My name is Kevin and I work in the Holiday Shop at Norton Grange Coastal Village, in the year I have been here the questions I have been asked about coming to the Isle of Wight are vast and I hope to cover many of the FAQ’s here..

This is Norton’s easy guide to Ferry Travel:

When do I book my ferry?

While making your booking we will ask you if you require ferry travel to the Island.

We will add the ferry crossing on and request your crossing times for you. The ferry operator will book as close to the times you have requested as possible…

When will I get my tickets?

You won’t receive a ferry ticket as such; once you have paid your final balance you will receive a letter from us giving you your full crossing details.

You will get your Departure and Arrival routes along with the crossing times the operator has booked for you. You will also get a ferry reservation number.

If you have supplied an email address, this information will be emailed to you.

What happens if I need to change the crossing time and/or route?

As long as you stick to the same ferry operator it’s no problem!

Wightlink operate ferries from Lymington to Yarmouth and also from Portsmouth to Fishbourne. We recommend using the Lymington to Yarmouth crossing for Norton Grange holidays.

Red Funnel operate only the Southampton to East Cowes ferry.

If you have your ferry crossing details from us, simply call the following numbers quoting “Bourne Leisure” and your reservation number.

Wightlink: 0871 376 1000

Red Funnel: 0844 844 9988

Of course if you do have any problems just give us a call here at Norton and we will happily sort out any enquiries for you!

It’s holiday day!

On your arrival day make your way to the ferry ports using the address details  provided.

Lymington: Undershore Rd, Lymington, Hampshire SO41 5SB

Portsmouth: Gunwharf Rd, Portsmouth PO1 2LA

Southampton: Terminal 1, Dock Gate 7, Quay Road, Southampton SO14 2AL

Only arrive at the departure terminal 30-60 minute before your scheduled sailing, otherwise you may be turned away.

I’m at the ferry port, what do I do now?

When you arrive at any of the ferry ports you will be greeted by a member of the operators’ team, they will scan your letter or ask for the reference number you have on the letter.

They will give you a Lane Number, and point you in the right direction. Go to the lane as indicated and await boarding procedures.

Once the team is ready for you to board, you will be guided by the team onto the ferry; the ferry parking bays are vast with lanes. The team will guide you every step of the way!

OK, I’m on the ferry, I’m parked up with my hand break on, now what do I do?

Follow all instructions given to you by the crew. Insure your hand break is firmly on and when safe to do so you must leave your vehicle, making your way to the lounge.

All the ferry operators have this procedure; you must leave your car for safety reasons.

There are lifts available on all ferries for those who require.

Once in the lounge, you will be able to relax and enjoy a light meal or snack, with a nice cup of tea or coffee. All operators have different options for you to enjoy.

The views from the ferries are spectacular; if you would rather not look rest assured the ferries are large and spacious with plenty of crew on hand.

We recommend you listen to the safety instructions given on the PA/TV system prior to departure.

The sea looks a little rough, should I worry?

The crew are on hand to make sure you are safe, and are highly trained.

If the sea and or weather gets too rough, the crossing will be terminated – Wightlink will guide you to use an alternate crossing route. Red Funnel will advise you accordingly.

Don’t worry though, these occurrences are very rare.

When do I go back to my car and how do I get off?

The crew will make an announcement on the PA system when it’s time to make your way back to your car.

Go to your car and leave your engine off until the boat has completely stopped and the ramp at the front has been lowered.

You will be guided by the crew on how to vacate.
